For our first feature we are highlighting artist and licensed architect, Maya Redzic.
Q: For those of us who don’t know you, can you share a bit about your background?
A: I am a licensed architect with a global perspective shaped by successful projects across the United States, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, and Europe. My architectural and interior design work is influenced by a strong artistic sensibility, inspired by a parallel passion for painting. Throughout my career, I have discovered a dynamic balance within my practice: the architect in me seeks symmetry and order, while the artist embraces a touch of chaos. This duality guides both my architectural process and my art making. Each begins with a clear vision and thoughtful analysis and evolves into layered textures and a refined color palette that give my work depth, nuance, and character.
Q: What inspired the Fold collection?
A: The Fold collection is inspired by my fascination with light and shadow and their power to transform an object over the course of a day. Each piece is designed to shift in appearance as natural and artificial light interact with its surface.
Q: I read on your website that the Fold collection “explores folds of different materials (paper, metal, fabric, canvas),” Can you describe the relationship between the interplay of the materials and your experience crafting them?
A: With a background in architecture, I am familiar with a wide range of construction materials and enjoy translating them into an artistic context. My work often involves experimenting with unconventional materials, where trial and error is an essential part of the process. Applying thin layers of concrete or plaster to my Fold works, for example, is far more complex than using these materials on walls; it requires carefully adjusted water ratios and the addition of binding agents to ensure proper adhesion and prevent cracking as the surface dries. Additionally, working with different subsurface, such as metal versus fabric, allows me to explore varying scales and expressions of the folds.
Q: A lot of your work features work with sculpted folds, how did you start sculpting with this medium?
A: It began as a happy accident! I was searching for the right piece of art for a client’s home, something that could spark conversation during dinner parties while also bringing a sense of harmony and tranquility to the space. That search led to the birth of the Desert Dunes collection. Each piece is uniquely sculpted, defined by gentle movement and the subtle interplay of beige and white, creating a calm yet captivating visual experience.
Q: A quote, poem, song, book, that resonates?
A: “I shut my eyes in order to see,” a quote by Paul Gauguin, deeply resonates with me. It speaks to the idea of looking inward for artistic inspiration rather than simply depicting what is visible. For me, it reflects the process of reinterpreting the ordinary, allowing emotion, memory, and intuition to shape how reality is expressed.
