This vintage raku vase by J. Berndt carries the organic, rounded form and narrow mouth typical of raku pottery, a Japanese firing technique where pieces are pulled from the kiln while still glowing hot and exposed to open air or combustible materials, producing the unpredictable iridescent surface seen here in layers of smoky copper and deep tones. That firing process makes every raku piece genuinely one of a kind, since the exact combustion and cooling conditions can never be fully repeated. Vintage condition. It works best as a standalone sculptural object where its iridescent surface can catch light from multiple angles.
